Rather than seeing Hakuto as a leading stock in the AI era, it would be more natural to view Hakuto as a technology trading company seeking to gain commercial opportunities around AI infrastructure investment.
If the number of AI servers increases due to the spread of generative AI, the amount of communication within data centers will increase. Therefore, demand for optical communications, optical transceivers, electronic devices, and inspection/measurement-related products will increase. If Hakuto can ride this trend, there is room for it to improve sales and profits of electronic components and electronic/electrical equipment.
However, I want to calm down a little here. Strong demand for AI servers is not the same as Hakuto's steady growth in profits. In the case of trading companies, what should be looked at is not the size of the theme, but the continuity of commercial rights, gross profit margins, inventory turnover, exchange rates, and relationships with major suppliers.
Value investors can easily view the company as a high-dividend semiconductor trading company with a 5% DOE minimum. On the other hand, the numbers are still insufficient for growth funds to evaluate it as a ``full-fledged beneficiary stock of AI data centers''. This sense of distance is the most interesting part of investment analysis.
Company Overview
Hakuto is an independent electronics technology trading company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime. The company provides semiconductors, electronic components, electronic and electrical equipment, etc. to domestic and overseas customers, and is also responsible for product selection and technical support.
What sets us apart from a mere wholesale trading company is that we have a strong ``technical sales'' approach that involves us from the customer's design stage. If customers can incorporate parts and devices from overseas manufacturers into their specifications in the upstream process of developing new products, it will be easier to maintain commercial flow during the subsequent mass production phase.
Another face is the chemical business. It has applications in industrial chemicals, water treatment, petroleum and pulp and paper, and operates at a slightly different rhythm than electronics. Although it is not as talked about as electronic devices, it can easily play a role in mitigating profit fluctuations when semiconductor market conditions are poor. Particularly in data centers, the bottleneck tends to be not only GPU performance, but also how to connect GPUs and servers with low latency. This is a situation where business opportunities are likely to arise for trading companies that handle optical communication-related components and electronic devices.
However, what investors should look at is more than just ``there is demand for AI servers.'' Which projects will include the products Hakuto handles, what will be their gross profit, and how long will they last? Only after confirming that point will the AI theme change to a performance theme.
Competitive advantage as a technology trading company
Hakuto's strength lies in its ability to act as a technical translator between overseas manufacturers and domestic customers.
Overseas component manufacturers do not necessarily have strong sales and technical support networks in the Japanese market. Domestic customers also need someone who will take care of everything from evaluation, design, quality, delivery, and transition to mass production in order to adopt cutting-edge components. Hakuto steps in and not only sells products, but also reduces the friction in hiring.
This business isn't flashy. However, trading companies that can get involved at the design stage are unlikely to collapse simply through price competition. If the evaluation continues after the announcement of financial results, it will be time for Hakuto to be reevaluated as a `technology trading company that protects gross profits with commercial rights and technical support,'' rather than a `wholesale business that is influenced by semiconductor market conditions.''
On the other hand, if a major supplier increases direct sales or consolidates its distributors, that strength suddenly becomes a weakness. The scariest thing about investment for semiconductor trading companies is the loss of commercial rights rather than a wave of demand. This is not a place to be optimistic.
How to read the latest financial results
In the fiscal year ending March 2026, Hakuto had sales of 181.178 billion yen and operating income of 6.080 billion yen. Compared to the previous fiscal year, sales decreased by 1.1% and operating income decreased by 23.2%. The operating profit margin was 3.4%, reflecting adjustments in the semiconductor and electronic component markets.
Looking at the numbers alone, it's a little unsatisfactory as an AI themed stock. At least the results for the fiscal year ending March 2026 are not ones in which AI-related demand alone offsets the decline in overall profits.
On the other hand, the company's plan for the fiscal year ending March 2027 is sales of 225 billion yen and operating profit of 8.8 billion yen. The recovery plan is for sales to increase by 24.2% and operating profit to increase by 44.7%. The operating profit margin will roughly return to 3.9%.
Now comes the difficult part. Plans are strong, but recent results show a decline in profits. For buying to continue after the announcement of financial results, it will be necessary to show in the first and second quarters whether the profit margin of the electronic device division will return or whether there will be a change in the order backlog or the quality of projects. The initial speed of recovery is more important than the company plan itself.
Personally, I think it is very meaningful to look at the operating profit margin here. Even if sales return, it will be difficult to maintain a good reputation if there are low-profit projects or heavy inventory burdens. In Hakuto's case, gross profit is more than sales, operating profit margin is more than gross profit, and finally cash. I want to watch it in this order.
You don't want to miss out on cash either. Operating cash flow for the fiscal year ending March 2026 was positive at 10.273 billion yen. On the other hand, investment cash flow was negative by 17.533 billion yen, reflecting the impact of growth investments and M&A. Are you creating sales while building up inventory, or are you accumulating profits while maintaining operating CF? This difference is also quite large when looking at dividend policy with a DOE floor.
Interpretation in the stock market
There are two main ways in which Hakuto is viewed on the stock market.
One is its reputation as a stock with high dividends and shareholder returns. In this regard, Hakuto's evaluation tends to be a little divided. Income investors are more likely to respond to dividends that are easy to read, but growth funds are less likely to react just by hearing the word "AI server." Only when we can see a path to returning the operating profit margin from 3.4% to approximately 3.9% will both funds move in the same direction.

If you look at Hakuto on its own, its AI theme and high dividends stand out. However, when compared among semiconductor trading companies, its position becomes a little clearer.

Looking at this comparison, Hakuto is not a ``high-growth, one-legged'' stock. Rather, it's an intermediate position that has both dividends and a thematic nature. That's why stock valuations tend to change gradually while being confirmed by numbers, rather than jumping all at once.
Bullish scenario
The bullish scenario is a case where demand related to AI data centers continues to be reflected in orders for electronic/electrical equipment and electronic components.
In this case, it is easy to not only recover sales but also improve gross profit margin and operating profit margin. If optical communication-related components and high-value-added electronic devices grow, the value of technology sales, rather than just trading company margins, may be reconsidered.
In addition, if the minimum dividend policy of 5% DOE continues, it will be easy for income investors to invest in their funds. Valuations are likely to be reviewed in situations where a recovery in business performance and a sense of security in dividends occur at the same time.
Bearish scenario
A bearish scenario is a case where demand does not return as much as the company plans.
For semiconductor trading companies, if customers' inventory adjustments are prolonged, not only sales but also gross profits are likely to suffer. Even if the AI market is strong, it may not be able to compensate for the weaknesses in consumer products, industrial equipment, and general-purpose semiconductors. We still need to confirm that we can boost company-wide operating profit with just some AI-related products.
Agency contract risks are also large. Major suppliers will increase direct sales, narrow down the number of distributors, and change conditions. These changes can appear sudden. The more a company has commercial rights as its strength, the more sensitive it should be to changes in those rights.
On the financial side, it is also necessary to look at the effects of growth investment, M&A, inventory, and exchange rates. The DOE lower limit supports dividends, but if returns become a heavy burden without profits and cash, the evaluation will become rather harsh.

At the same time, operating profit decreased in the fiscal year ending March 2026. If you skip this point and write "Growth because it is related to AI", your analysis will be quite dangerous. In fact, profits have decreased recently. That's why I want to see if the recovery plan for the fiscal year ending March 2027 really progresses.
For investors, I think Hakuto is a stock that offers the security of a high dividend and room for upside in AI infrastructure. However, the main factors in evaluation are not the theme but orders, gross profit margin, operating profit margin, and cash. It will be reviewed once the numbers are complete. If this is not the case, high dividends alone will not provide much upside.
When looking at this company, it's best not to get too carried away with the big story of AI. The essence of Hakuto is whether it can protect its commercial flow as a technology trading company, restore profit margins, and generate enough cash to support DOE. That's exactly what I want to see in the next financial results.
